Children’s Eye Health and Safety

Learning more about eye care and health can help raise awareness about eye diseases and how to prevent them. Many children struggle with eye issues because of genetics or poor diet. Understanding children’s eye health and safety can help us ensure they get the right care. As children grow and develop, keeping up with their vision is essential. Here are a few tips to stay focused on your child’s eye health and safety.

Schedule An Eye Exam

Scheduling regular eye exams are essential for promoting optimal eye health. During these visits, you can ask questions about your child’s vision and learn more about eye care. The ophthalmologist can also screen for potential eye issues and offer solutions that fit your child’s needs.

Prevent Eye Injuries At Home

It may seem obvious, but home is the primary place where eye injuries can occur. Falling on stairs or tripping on rugs can increase the risk of eye injuries. You can help prevent eye injuries by removing tripping hazards from home.

  • Keep dangerous tools, such as knives or screwdrivers, out of reach
  • Add extra lighting in the bedroom and the stairways to avoid tripping hazards
  • Install gates at the top and bottom of staircases for young children
  • Secure any loose railings or area rugs
  • Encourage protective eyewear, such as sunglasses, while outside

Limit Screen Time

The American Optometric Association encourages parents to follow a 20/20/20 rule when watching television or other devices. Children should take a break every 20 minutes and focus on another object at least 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This will give the eye muscles a break and promote better eye health.

Learning about eye care is integral to meeting children's
physical and medical needs.  As we focus on eye care for children, we can encourage optimal growth and development.
